Finished the Book and Remember Nothing? Try Three-Line Notes After Each Chapter
Three-line notes are the simplest way to remember a book after you finish it. You finish a good book, and a month later someone asks what it was about. You manage a few sentences. It is not a bad memory. If you read without doing anything else, most of the content fades. That is normal.
The fix does not need a nice notebook or a fancy app. Just three lines after each chapter.

What goes in the three lines
Line 1: the main idea of the chapter. Write it in your own words, not copied from the book. If you cannot put it in your own words, you have not understood it yet. Reread a few pages.
Line 2: one memorable example. A story, a number, a quote. Concrete examples are what make the main idea stick.
Line 3: where you would use it. What this chapter means for your work or your life. If nothing comes to mind, write “nothing yet.” That is fine too.

Why you have to write it yourself
Underlining and highlighting feel like studying, but your hand is doing the work, not your head. Rewriting in your own words forces you to think about what the passage really says. That thinking is what helps you remember.
Write right after finishing the chapter, while it is fresh. If you wait until the end of the book, you will have forgotten most of the early chapters.
Where to write
- The inside cover or the blank pages at the back, if the book is yours.
- A notes file on your phone, one file per book.
- A paper notebook, if you like writing by hand.
Pick a place you will actually open again. That is the only thing that matters. That is why three-line notes work better than highlighting. Three-line notes can live anywhere, as long as you can find them again. A page of three-line notes is all you need to recall the book later.
When you finish, review once
After the last chapter, open all your notes and turn them into one summary page: five main ideas, three things you will do. It takes fifteen minutes. Months later, if you want to recall the book, you only need that page.
Not every book needs this. A novel you read for fun, just enjoy it. This method is for books you want to learn something from.
