Friday Movie Night at Home Without the 30-Minute Argument
Every Friday is family movie night at our place. Sounds lovely. In reality, it was half an hour of scrolling, everyone wanting something different, and someone giving up and going to bed.
After a few rounds of that, we made some small rules. They helped a lot.
Take turns picking
This one fixed most of the problem. This week Dad picks. Next week one of the kids. The picker decides. Everyone else watches without complaining.
You end up seeing things you’d never have chosen yourself. Some of them turn out great.
Keep a running list
During the week, whenever someone hears about a good movie, it goes on a shared note. On Friday, you pick from the list instead of scrolling through every app.
Keep the snacks simple
Nothing fancy. A bowl of popcorn, some cut fruit, a few drinks.
We pop corn in a pot on the stove. The kids love adding the butter and salt themselves.
Phones away, lights down
Obvious, but easy to forget. One person on their phone and everyone gets distracted.
Turn off the big light and keep one small lamp on. It suddenly feels a bit more like a cinema.
Talk about it afterwards
When the credits roll, everyone says one thing. A favorite scene. Something that didn’t work. Just a few minutes.
Sometimes that chat is the best part of the night.
